Scam calls

Fraudsters try to steal your details to target you with a scam call.

We explain what to expect to give you the confidence to hang up.

How a scam call works

One of the most common scams is when a fraudster calls to pretend to be your bank, a company you trust or the police.

If they use your personal and banking details to identify themselves, you may believe it’s genuine.

Often before they've called you, fraudsters may have targeted you with a scam email or text to get your details.

We cover what a typical scam call looks like in our video.

If there’s ever a problem with your account, we’ll always protect it first then contact you to put things right. We'll never call to tell you to move money to another account.

To check that we called you, hang up then dial 159 to talk with us.

The methods fraudsters use on a scam call

Fraudsters pretend to be genuine companies

To trick you into talking, fraudsters can copy genuine phone numbers and sound professional on a call.

If you talk with them, they have more of a chance to convince you to move your money.

Hang up the phone.

Did you expect to get a call?

A genuine company will never call to tell you to move your money.

Be safe and hang up on calls like this.

If you need to check, call a number you trust, never one you’re given over the phone.

Fraudsters may have stolen your details

Just because a caller knows your personal and banking details doesn’t mean they’re genuine.

Your details can be stolen or you may have given them away by mistake after receiving an email or text that was a scam.

Always hang up if you’re not sure who’s on the phone.

Listen carefully and challenge

Fraudsters will say anything to get you to move your money.

Ask yourself if a call makes sense.

It’s not rude to hang up.

Stay in control of your bank account and money.

Do they want you to move money?

Fraudsters will lie to convince you to move your money to another account.

Often they say your account is at risk of fraud, or the bank is stealing from you.

If a caller wants you to move your money, it’s a scam.

This is your last chance to hang up.
