What is a passcode?

A passcode is made up of a unique set of numbers that you use only once.

They help us to confirm that it’s you using your account.

If a person calls to ask you for a passcode, hang up. It’s a scam.

How passcodes work

  • There are certain reasons why we may send you a passcode by text or automated call, for example:

    • When you log in to Internet Banking.
    • If you buy something online with your card.
    • You change details like your address, phone number or password.

Please check that we have your latest phone number.

  • After you get a passcode, you need to enter it on your Internet Banking screen or our app.

If you enter a code incorrectly, you may need to call us and start again.

How to protect your passcode

Keep your passcode private

A Bank of Scotland passcode is for you to use and nobody else.

Never share it with anyone.

Only enter a passcode when our Mobile Banking app or Internet Banking screen tells you to.

How to spot a passcode scam

Fraudsters try to steal your personal or banking details to help them convince you it’s your bank on a call. In this scam, they ask you for a passcode, One Time Password or to confirm an action in our app. Fraudsters might use any kind of reason why you should do this, for example to:

  • Stop a fraudulent payment.
  • Refund your account.
  • Secure your account.

If you get a call like this, hang up.

We’ll never call you to ask you to do anything like this.
