  • You can start using your card right away.

The very first time you use your contactless card, you will need to tap in your PIN. But once you've done that, you're ready to start using the contactless feature for purchases of £100 or less

Where can I use my contactless card?

You can make contactless payments anywhere you see the contactless symbol.

Over 120,000 card readers in the UK already take contactless credit card payments. You’ll find them in dozens of popular retailers, including McDonald’s, Pret a Manger, Greggs, Subway and Caffè Nero.

  • What is contactless?
Contactless is a new payment function for transactions of up to £100. You can pay for your goods simply by holding your card in front of a card-reader.

    What are its benefits?
It’s quick, convenient and saves you time - there’s no need to rummage around for the right amount of change, or enter your PIN for most of your contactless transactions.

Is paying in this new way secure?
Contactless uses the latest secure Mastercard technology required by the payment industry. In the unlikely event that it is lost or stolen, your card also has protection against fraud loss - providing that you let us know as soon as you realise you no longer have it.

    Where can you use it?

Our credit cards featuring contactless technology are designed for use in most countries around the world. However there are a few countries where you may not be able to make a contactless payment. If you attempt to make a contactless payment and are unable to do so you can still make purchases by using chip and PIN or swipe transactions. For a full list of all the places where you can use contactless, including your local retailers, visit Mastercard Paypass.

Will I be charged twice if I accidentally double tap on the reader?
No. The reader and card are configured to ensure that you will only be charged for one transaction.

Can a purchase be made without my knowledge (for example, will the card-reader activate if I walk past it)?
No. Your card has to be extremely close to the reader - typically between two and four centimetres - and the retailer must have first entered the amount for you to approve.

What happens if I try to pay for goods over the contactless limit of £100?
For transactions over the contactless limit, the retailer will need you to make purchases using chip and PIN or swipe transactions.

Can I set my own contactless limit?
You can now use our Mobile Banking app to choose a contactless payment limit between £30 & £95.

What if I don’t want a contactless card?
Credit cards are contactless as standard but if you don’t want a contactless card, please call us. We can send a contact only card out to you.

  • Fast

It only takes seconds to pay for something with your contactless credit card. A beep or a green light tells you when it’s done. And since you need a fresh prompt for payment each time you use it, you don’t have to worry that you might be charged twice

  • Safe

Nor do you have to worry about accidentally paying for someone else’s shopping. Contactless won’t work unless you place your card right next to the reader.

Contactless transactions are covered by the same fraud protection as chip & PIN so you won’t be charged for any fraudulent use provided you contact us as soon as you realise your card is lost or stolen.

  • Secure

Your contactless credit card has plenty of built-in security technology. When you use it to pay for bigger transactions – anything over £100 – you have to tap in your PIN in the usual way. Occasionally you’ll be asked to use your PIN for smaller purchases, especially if you’ve made several contactless transactions in a row. That’s another security feature that checks that it’s still you who’s using it.
